CHIANTI AND VILLAGES
Biking along the Chianti region will be an amazing trip, because there are many natural beautifulness that allow you live a healthy ride far from the polluted and crowded cities.
Chianti is a hilly region of central Tuscany full of wineyards where is producted the famous Chianti Classico red wine.
This place is often chosen by many bikers of all around the world as their preferite bicycle route
Attractions and villages in Chianti:
1-GREVE IN CHIANTI
in Florence province, it is included in Chianti region
attractions:
-many castles: Mugnana castle, Sezzate castle, Vicchiomaggio castle, Uzzano castle, Verrazzano castle
-Villas: Brody villa, Vignamaggio villa. Here was shot the film “Much Ado About Nothing” (Molto rumore per nulla)
Landscape: from here you cam admire the Chianti hills
2-MONTEFIORALLE, a Greve in Chianti fraction, is a fortified medieval village
Here is a house whose property is ascribed to Amerigo Vespucci, the famous italian explorer of America.
3-RADDA IN CHIANTI
in the Siena province, included in the most famous vine production zone, it is a high danger
earthquake place.
This characteristics countryside village is paceful and nice. You can admire the Propositura di San Nicolò, its most famous church
4-SOCIVILLE
In the Siena province. Sociville is a high danger earthquake place too.
Here you can find a mixture of ancient and beauty buildings and natural green landscape.
An important attraction that you can ride by bike is Ponte della Pia.
Other attraction:
-many churches and Villas (Villa Cetinale, Villa Volte Alte, Villa Celsa)
5-SAN GIMIGNANO
It is situated in Siena province, in the heart of Tuscany.
It’s a small hillside village which has changed little since the Middle Ages. Thirteen towers remain from when it was a strategic fortification. You can easily make it the destination for a day trip from Florence or Siena
-Territory: countryside and rolling hills.
-Road condition: the roads were not always in the best state of repair, and at one point our road, dirt track
San Gimignano is on high hill at 350 metres height.
You could spend a good couple of hours wandering the streets of this fabulous town the ,
Attractions:
Collegiate Church, consecrated in 1148,
the people’s palace (with its fine art collection),
the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Sacred Arts.
Podesta’s tower, 54m-high, constructed as early as 1311.
The great thing about San Gimignano is that it still retains its medieval qualities and it is possible, despite the fact that this is on a major tourist route, to find peace and tranquillity.
6-MONTALCINO
Montalcino is famous for Brunello, probably Italy’s most famous red wine.
Join history and enology doing a visit to the Rocca, a 14th-century fortress with a wine bar offering tastes of various local vintages.
Five miles south you can admire the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, a Romanesque masterpiece with an interior partially decorated in translucent alabaster. It also enjoys magnificent acoustics, as you will hear if you hear the traditional Gregorian chant sung seven times daily.
Between Montalcino and Sant’Antimo, the collection of rural artifacts, photos, and documents at the Museo della Comunità di Montalcino e del Brunello on the Fattoria dei Barbi worth a visit.
7-COLLE VAL D’ELSA, in Siena province
Immersed in the peculiar tuscan countryside, this place will offer to you a high cultural experience
Attractions:
-Civic Museum and sacred art (Museo civico e d’arte sacra), situated in the municipality palace: important works art of XVII AND XVIII century. Another interesting thing is the TESORO DI GALOGNANO, a silver dowry composed of four chalices, one patena and one silver spoon.
-Ancient churches
-Baluardo, a defensive building
8-POMAIA
Pomaia is a little village set among the green hills of Pisa, placed in one of the most beautiful Tuscany countryside. It is a typical Medieval stoned village.
The historical centre is made up of small houses and the only building is in the church square. It is probably the original core.
During the last years, this village has become famous for a Tibetan Buddhist centre, from the same school of Dalai Lama, who has visited the centre several times. In this place of brotherhood and peace, the monks have built a little Tibetan centre, its chorten (stupas or statues), its prayers and its holy paintings.
The visit of the Buddhist centre in Pomaia is a chance of inter-religious meeting.
9-VOLTERRA
Its historic centre is etrusc origin
Architectural attractions:
-Roman ruins ed medieval buildings: la Cathedral church and Priori palace.
-Surrounding wall of etrusc origin
-Roman theatre
-Porta S.Francesco
-Fortezza di Volterra
10-MONTEPULCIANO, in the Siena province. This village is rich of wineyards whence Nobile di Montepulciano wine is obtained.
This village is quite and ancient, nice for a break during your bike tour. This can be good chance to join a bike tour with wine tasting. In fact you can ride through its wineyard and take a tasting of its Nobile di Montepulciano wine
11-MONTERIGGIONI, in the Siena province. It is ancient fortified village mentioned by
Dante Alighieri, in the XXXI canto of Inferno of his Divine Comedy.
